The following Christmas ornament ideas require cheap supplies and can be created by kids of all ages. They use minimal materials, and do not require glitter. A couple of the ornaments do require a toilet paper tube, so you may need to start saving them or ask for donations. However, if you are like me you may already have bags of toilet paper tubes that have been donated to you.
Stocking Cap Ornament
This easy ornament requires about 3/4″ piece from a toilet paper tube. You will also need yarn in a variety of colors. Cut yarn into 12″ pieces, approximately 30 pieces. Fold yarn in half, wrap around the tube and pull ends through the yarn loop on the other end. Keep loops facing outward. Slide together and stuff with cotton balls. Tie ends together with a double knot. Trim ends to make tassel on top. Make yarn hanger if desired. Watch my YouTube tutorial to see the step-by-step directions.
Wreath Ornament
This ornament also requires few supplies. I slice a pool noodle into approximately 3/4โ pieces. A bread knife works great. I cut pieces of cardboard about 1/2โ x 4โ to use as a shuttle. Create a shuttle by cutting a notch on both ends of cardboard. Wind some yarn on the shuttle, but make sure you can still pass the shuttle through the hole. Tie the yarn to the pool noodle. Pass the shuttle through the hole and wrap around the ring. Cover the ring completely. Refill shuttle if necessary. Remove shuttle, thread beads on yarn. Wrap yarn, thread beads, wrap, and continue to create “ornaments” on your wreath. Add a ribbon and a bow on the bottom of the wreath. Add a hanger on the top. Check out my YouTube tutorial to see the step-by-step directions.
Christmas Tree Ornament
This ornament only requires paper, glue and a string or ribbon hanger. Use a tree template or die cut a symmetrical tree shape. If cutting your own trees, fold paper lengthwise. Trace 2 trees on each paper. Make sure the straight line of the tree is on the fold. Cut at least 20 trees. Cut 2-3 papers at once. If using a die cut, fold trees in half lengthwise. Glue a string or ribbon to the tree to make a hanger. Use glue to stick the papers on top of one another, similar to a book. Glue ends together. Separate papers to make sure they do not stick together. Watch my YouTube tutorial to see the step-by-step directions.
Paper Lantern Ornament
Another ornament created with a toilet paper tube. Cut tube in half or approximately 2″. You can either paint or cover tube with paper. Next, wrap a piece of paper around the tube then cut the length to be slightly longer than the tube. Remove from the tube and fold the paper lengthwise. Make cuts on the fold about 1/4โ apart from one side to the other. Glue paper to the top and bottom of the tube. If desired, repeat with another slightly longer paper to create more depth. Make a hanger with pipe cleaner or string. Watch my YouTube tutorial to see the step-by-step directions.
Gnome Ornament
This is is such a simple ornament, yet so cute! Use a semi circle template for the hat. Use a pen or marker to trace the template on felt or fleece. Cut. Glue to make a cone shape leaving a slight gap on the top of the cone. Wrap yarn around your fingers about 40 times or more for a fuller beard. Thread a piece of yarn (about 8โ)ย through the loops and tie a double knot. Tape ends of the yarn to make a “needle”. Thread the yarn through the top of the cone hat and tie a knot to make a loop. Cut extra yarn. Cut the other end of the yarn loops to create a beard. Watch my YouTube tutorial to see the step-by-step directions.
